Growing up, you are always told “Just be yourself.” From job interviews to meaningful life connections, you have been ingrained that everything will work out if you “just be yourself.” That phrase plays like a broken record throughout life, especially if you have chosen the path of creativity.
For those of you trying to find your voice as an artist, you may feel a sense of pressure that you must display your utmost authentic self to the world. After all, we live in a world where writers want their work to truly feel like them. From personal opinions and beliefs to writing style, there has become an obsession of how you come across in your work. Yes, let me repeat that…how YOU come across in your work. That within itself could be what is holding you back as a writer. The stress you feel from thinking up a caption for your personal instagram page shouldn’t equate to how you feel when writing.
I am here to say that the mindset of “Just be yourself” may be what is causing you writer’s block.
